Episode highlights:

Airpro is a subsidiary of the state-owned airport company Finavia, meaning that Finavia is responsible for sustainability reporting. However, Airpro decided to create a voluntary sustainability report with Brandkind. Why?

Airpro has been working on sustainable business practices for a long time. Since 2014, we have transitioned to using electric equipment and paid close attention to environmental impacts and the lifecycle of our equipment.

It was important for us to be transparent about our commitment to sustainability and reporting, and to highlight our own achievements and goals in the field of sustainability. We also saw it as a great opportunity to improve our sustainability work and receive valuable feedback on our report.

The aviation industry is highly regulated, and this is something deeply ingrained in the entire staff. Everything we do in our operations is carefully documented. As legislation changes and standards become stricter, we work closely with Finavia. However, we have noticed that Airpro has its own focus areas that we want to highlight in our own reporting.

What was the report creation process like?

The reporting process was intense but rewarding. The most surprising aspect was how much data and information had to be gathered from different departments. This required a lot of collaboration and internal communication, but it brought the teams closer together and increased understanding of the importance of sustainability work within the company.

Our collaboration with Brandkind was more of a sparring partnership, where we exchanged ideas and received great suggestions on the content and format of the report. We have been very satisfied with the partnership and support, and we were able to clearly present Airpro’s key themes in the report.

How did the reporting process affect sustainability work within the company?

A sustainability team was established within the company. The reporting process made sustainability work more concrete and visible throughout the organization. We identified our areas for improvement and set clear goals. We also created a measurement system that we’ve been following for the past few years. In addition, we improved our emissions reporting, took concrete actions for sustainability, and strengthened collaboration with stakeholders.

We’ve received positive feedback for our transparency and the concrete measures we’ve taken for sustainability. The report has also been a useful tool for employees, helping them better understand what sustainability means within the company.

Aviation has significant CO2 emissions, but the industry has reduction and sustainability targets. What kind of sustainability discussions are taking place in the aviation sector?

The path toward sustainable aviation involves, for example, investing in new technologies and improving fuel efficiency. There are many discussions in the industry about how to reduce CO2 emissions and how passengers can make more responsible choices. Collaboration and innovation are key to ensuring that each player does its part.

Aviation accounts for about 3% of all human-caused emissions, but it’s crucial that every player takes responsibility. The adoption of new power sources is a good example of progress. At airports, the focus is on reducing energy consumption, especially in terminals and heavy equipment. Future plans are exciting, and it will be interesting to see where they lead.
